Honshu is the largest islands of Japan thus also called the Main Island. It is lying south of Hokkaido (connected to it by the Seikan Tunnel), north of Shikoku across the Inland Sea, and northeast of Kyushu across the Kanmon Strait.

A mountain range runs along the length of Honshu from end to end. The Japanese Alps is a part of these ranges at the center of the island. The highest peak is the active volcano Mount Fuji reaching 3776 meters above sea level.

Honshu's largest city is the capital Tokyo, other cities on the island include Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Kobe, Kyoto, Akita, Sendai, Fukushima, Nagano and Hiroshima.
