Hokkaido is the second biggest of the four major islands of Japan. It is lying north of Honshu and is connected to it by the Seikan Tunnel. The center of the island has a number of mountains and volcanic plateaus, and there are coastal plains in all directions.
Hokkaido's largest city is the capital Sapporo, other cities on the island include: Asahikawa, Hakodate, Kushiro and Muroran. The island is surrounded by the Sea of Japan on the west, Sea of Okhotsk on the north and the Pacific Ocean on the Southeast. The Kuril Islands lie to the east of Hokkaido.
