Kyushu is the second smallest of the four major islands of Japan. It is also the westernmost and southernmost of the four. Kyushu is dominated by mountain ranges, the highest active volcano of Japan is located here, Aso-San at 1592 meters. Mt Kuyu is the highest mountain on the island rising to 1788 meters above sea level.
Major cities in Kyushu include: Fukuoka (the biggest and most populous), Kitakyushu, Kumamoto, Kagoshima and Nagasaki.
Surrounding islands are Amakusa Island, Goto Islands, Koshikishima Islands, all lying in the East China Sea west of the Kyushu.
