East Timor physical features
East Timor gained independence in 2002 from Indonesia. It lies in Southeast Asia, on the eastern part of the Island of Timor.
The island is bounded by the Timor sea, Wetar strait and Ombai strait. The small islands of Atauro and Jaco also belong to East Timor.The highest peak is Tatamailau rising at 2963 meters above sea level near the western part of the country.
Oecusse - an exclave within Indonesian West Timor – is also part of the country. The capital and biggest settlement is Dili.
