Somalia is Africa's easternmost country. Somalia's terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains, and highlands. In the far north, however, the rugged east-west ranges of the Karkaar Mountains lie at varying distances from the Gulf of Aden coast.

The northern part of the country is hilly, the central and southern areas are flat. Principal rivers are the Jubba and Shabelle. The Shebelle, however, does not reach the sea except during seasons of high rain. The capital city is Mogadishu. Other cities include Beledweyne, Kismayo and Baidoa. Highest point is Shimbiris rising 2416 meters above sea level.
