Mauritania is located on the Atlantic coast of Western Africa. Mauritania is dominated by the Sahara Desert. The country is generally flat, forming vast, arid plains broken by occasional ridges and clifflike outcroppings.

Kediet Ijill is the country's highest peak at 915 meters.
The capital city is Nouakchott. Other important cities are Atar, Zouaret, Nema and Rosso.
