St Lawrence island is an island located in the Bering Sea, between Russia and Alaska. In spite of being located closer to Russian land, the island belongs to Alaska. Being sixth in the row in terms of area size, there are only five larger islands in the United States. The shape of the island is elongated in west-east direction, its width (north-south) varies between approximately 10-20 miles, while the length in west-east direction is almost 100 miles.
The only two settlement on St. Lawrence Island are Gambell and Savoonga, home of around 1200-1300 people, both located on the northern cost of the island.
