Information about the geography of Iraq
The Republic of Iraq lies in the Middle East, bordered by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iran and the Persian Gulf.
The country slopes from mountains over 3,000 meters above sea level along the border with Iran and Turkey to the remnants of sea-level, reedy marshes in the southeast. Much of the land is desert or wasteland.
The mountains in the northeast are an extension of the alpine system that runs eastward from the Balkans into southern Turkey, northern Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, terminating in the Himalayas.
Baghdad is the capital city. Basrah and Umm Qasr are the main ports. The rivers, Tigris and Euphrates, flow through Iraq (from Turkey) to meet at the Shatt al Arab River which drains into the Persian Gulf.
