England is the largest and most populous constituent country of the
United Kingdom, comprising the central and southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain, plus offshore islands, including the
Isle of Wight and
Isle of Man.
England is bordered by
Wales on the west and by
Scotland on the north.
Most of England consists of rolling hills, but it is more mountainous in the north with a chain of low mountains, the
Pennines.
London, on the
River Thames, is the capital of England and the United Kingdom as well. Other important cities in England are Birmingham,
Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Southampton, Plymouth, Bristol, Nottingham and Sheffield amongst many others.
Major rivers are the Thames,
Severn (the longest one), Ouse, Trent, Tyne and Mersey.
