Sudan is located in Northern Africa. The country is mostly flat with mountains in the east and west. The principal river is the Nile.
Kinyeti is the country's highest point at 3187 meters above sea level.

The capital city is Khartoum. Other important cities are Omdurman, Port Sudan, Kassala, Kosti, and Juba.

South Sudan obtained independence from Sudan in 2011.
